Effect Of Eckerd Drugstore Buyout On Tampa, Fla., Area Debatable.

Apr. 6--TAMPA, Fla. -- Eckerd Corp. joins a long list of homegrown companies whose names have disappeared from the local business landscape.

Some observers contend that these kinds of takeovers can lead to the erosion of corporate leadership and community involvement.

Others say it's just a normal part of business.

While employment can suffer at merged companies, such changes generally don't hurt a region's economic development efforts or business image.
