French electricity shock
The French president and finance minister made personal telephone calls to the European Commission in an 11th-hour attempt to save an E8bn (pound sterling5.4bn) merger of two French electrical equipment groups.
Several senior French officials in the commission were also understood to have lobbied the competition directorate on behalf of Schneider Electric and Legrand, which have already merged in the mistaken belief that they would receive approval for the deal.
