When Networking, Anyone Can Start The Conversation

Wednesday, November 26 2008

I was watching a conversation between two people I follow on twitter the other day about whether all the people they followed should follow them. If you are wondering how twitter works, here is a good article on using twitter for business. Anyway, the short of it is that you can use twitter as a networking tool to build relationships with other people - all around the world.

Yes, it's about networking. The debate was about following people and having people follow you. One person was adamant that all of the people she followed should follow her. She thought they were "snubbing" her if she followed them and they didn't follow back.

What a short sighted view. In networking, someone has to start the conversation. And whether you're face to face or online, that rule applies. Then a relationship with the person can be built on that tiny step. But if you're not willing to begin the conversation, nothing will ever happen.

On twitter, you can carry on a conversation with someone without you following them or them following you. That's the beauty of twitter. Then if you each decide that following is a good idea you both have a choice.

If you're trying to build your business, creating and nurturing relationships with other people is a great way to do it. So hurry up and get started now.

for any networking system one must make the first move.
I find that many social network (on and off-line) people do not really wish to network. They wish to be voyeurs. Nothing is wrong with voyeurs of networking. We must accept that as a fact.
