Don't Learn The Hard Way (Like Motrin) To Hear Your Target Market

Monday, November 17 2008

I've talked a good bit about making sure you do your market research before you decide what to pitch and to whom. And now with social media like twitter and youtube, you not only have a new set of tools, you have a force to be reckoned with.

This concept was very obvious this past weekend when one lone mom found the new social media advertising campaign of Motrin and felt offended. She proceeded to tell her network about it and each of them told their network about it until there was a storm of negative talk on twitter which resulted in Motrin pulling the ad.

Wow. This was the power of word of mouth combined with the web. It still amazes me how quickly something can take off and take on a life of its own.

You can use this phenomonon to help you find out what your market is looking for to help solve their problems. But you have to be part of the discussion to make it happen. Decide what social media tools you will use and start...today.
