Grand Rapids, Mich.— Case goods and occasional manufacturer and importer Hekman Furniture will close its plant in Lexington, N.C., on June 29.

The 100,000-square-foot factory, which employs 35 people, produces occasional furniture. Global competition in the category prompted the shutdown,

the company said. Some employees will transfer to Hekman's distribution center in Linwood, N.C.

The 26 who won't transfer will receive severance benefits, including wage and benefits continuation.

Hekman also has applied for additional benefits for displaced workers under the federal Trade Adjustment Assistance and Alternate Trade Adjustment Assistance programs.

The company will continue operations at its Woodmark plant in High Point and at two plants in Grand Rapids.

"We'll keep manufacturing home office, home entertainment and select occasional pieces," said Dan Henslee, president of Hekman.
