Sustainable and symbolic features keynote the design of the Heifer International Center in Little Rock, Ark., by local architect Polk Stanley Rowland Curzon Porter Architects, Ltd. Heifer is a development organization that assists poor people by providing livestock and training how to
care for them. Appropriate to its mission of environmental responsibility, the project is being developed according to guidelines of the U.S. Green Building Council. The first phase of the project, which occupies a re-claimed brownfield site next to the new Clinton Presidential Library, is a 95,000-sf office building scheduled for completion in September. The half-circle building plan, with a floor plate only 62 feet wide, will let natural light reach deep into the interior. Subsequent phases of the project, which will include a display of livestock used in Heifer's programs, will take the form of concentric rings that expand outward from the headquarters building. CDI Contractors of Little Rock is the general contractor.BSA LifeStructures, in association with Blackburn Architects, is architect for a $67.5 million, 320,000-sf Clarian Health Partners clinical lab near downtown Indianapolis. A joint venture of Wurster Construction and Smoot Construction is the GC. These firms are all Indianapolis-based. Completion: spring 2006.
A joint venture of Detroit-based firms Barton Malow Co. and Ideal Contracting is de-signing and constructing a new 442,000-sf General Motors engine plant in Flint, Mich. The project is slated for completion in October.
