The area of peace studies has tried to look at four specific levels of violence, traditionally. In 1997 there are two other kinds of violence that require attention: structural violence now exists in the international community in the neocolonial era; human beings now do violence to the ecological system in which they exist. The four traditional areas involve intrapersonal violence that seems to exist within the psyche. Then there is interpersonal violence. Groups of people do violence to other groups. Then there is war, the most dramatic kind of violence.
