All of Cannes's fascinating, and frequently infuriating, contradictions were on display at the 2004 edition of the world's most frenetic film festival. Longtime festival head Gilles Jacob aroused the ire of the cinephilic contingent by claiming that there were fewer "boring" art films in competition--a competition that included, strangely enough, Shrek 2 as well as the latest art film by festival favorite Wong Kar-wai.
