Among the newly elected board's actions was the approval of two new SBMEF scholarship programs. The following is an overview of these programs and some of the guidelines and requirements for application. For further details and a complete list of requirements and procedures, refer to the 2009 Management
New ABWA Student Chapter Scholarship Program
Colleges and universities that have active ABWA student chapters will each be awarded one $2,000 scholarship per year through the new ABWA Student Chapter Scholarship Program.
The ABWA Student Chapter Scholarship, which is open to ABWA members as well as nonmembers, is to be used only for tuition, books and fees. Applications will be accepted beginning Oct. lof each year and scholarship applications must be received at ABWA National by Dec. 1. The board of Trustees will make the selection.
To participate, ABWA student groups must be considered in "good standing" in the national Association following the same practices as chapters.Three qualified applications must be received for a scholarship to be granted. The number of qualified applications per chapter/network submitted to ABWA National for each Student Chapter Special Scholarship is limited to 10.
The Legacy Scholarship Program
The new Legacy Scholarship Program will allow the Board of Trustees to offer special scholarships in memory of those who bequeath $100,000 or more to SBMEF.
In addition to having the funds available, strong local support by a chapter/network is required. Under this program two $5,000 scholarship awards will be offered to junior or senior applicants attending a four-year accredited college or university authorized to confer degrees at least at the baccalaureate level within the United States. The Pirate Charter Chapter in Greenville, N. C., will be the first group to participate in the Legacy Scholarship Program as a result of Ms. Nina Belle Redditt's generous estate contribution.
