PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 11, 1997--Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCHN) is pleased to announce the hiring of Fredrick R. Pond (Fred) as its new Director Information Services. After several months of searching nationwide, Fred was recruited out of Seattle where he was working

In his new position, Fred will have full responsibility for the leadership of our IS department.

Fred has spent the last seven years with SSA, the largest shipping terminal operating company in the United States, most recently in the position of Director of Information Systems. His responsibilities included managing a staff of 45, project definition and prioritization, budgeting and system planning. Previously Fred worked for Anderson Consulting where he managed computer projects for a variety of clientele ranging from Microsoft to Precision Castparts. He holds a degree in Business from the University of Idaho and is also a CPA in both Idaho and Washington. Fred is married and has two children.
