Cypress Semiconductor Subsidiary Taps JDS Uniphase Veteran to
Accelerate Penetration of Optical Networking Market
Silicon Light Machines (SLM), a subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor (NYSE:CY),
Silicon Light Machines designs, builds and markets optical subsystems based on its core microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology -- the Grating Light Valve (GLV(TM)). With its GLV already proven in high-resolution display solutions, SLM is now combining its expertise in MEMS design and manufacturing with optics design and network engineering to build products for optical communications networks.
Zarem comes to SLM from JDS Uniphase, where he held several leadership positions within the company's sales and marketing organizations -- most recently as vice president of market development. Prior to JDSU, Zarem was a general manager at Ortel Corporation (since acquired by Agere Corporation), where he directed strategic planning, implementation and forecasting for the Wireless Communications Division.
"As Silicon Light Machines ventures into the optical networking arena, Zarem's extensive optics experience will be a critical ingredient of our success -- bringing SLM's optical networking products to market and accelerating their penetration in this exciting industry," said Tom Werner, CEO of Silicon Light Machines.
"The technical innovation of Silicon Light Machines, combined with the backing of an industry mainstay like Cypress Semiconductor, gives me an opportunity to leverage my optical background within a small, yet proven organization," said Zarem. "As our customers design the next generation of communications networks, I look forward to positioning SLM as a major supplier of leading-edge optical subsystems."
Zarem holds a Ph.D and MS from the California Institute of Technology. He also holds a BS degree in physics from the University of California, Berkeley. He has published over 29 articles and holds 2 patents.
