PrintOn Earth Day, it is worth it to take a little time out and consider what we can do to improve the environment. There are a number of simple things you can do to increase your sustainability. Cash Money Life suggests these five simple things you can do to help save the Earth. Some of them will even help you save money.
Do you do anything to save the Earth -- and money?
- Reusable shopping bags. For about $1 apiece, you can buy reusable shopping backs to take to the store. You can usually get these at a store or at some other outlet. For short trips, I like one of my sturdy canvas bags from days gone by. Also, if you don't feel that you can buy reusable bags right now, bring your already-used bags back to the store for reuse.
- Rechargeable batteries. These can save you money over the long haul -- provided you charge them properly. And they keep toxic batteries (which should be disposed of carefully) out of the regular trash.
- Reusable water bottles. Save money and the planet by avoiding those disposable plastic bottles. My husband, son and I all have reusable bottles. We also got a filter at our house for our drinking water. Since we drink a lot of water, we save close to $500 a year, and the bottles and water filtration system have already paid for themselves.
- CFLs. Use less energy than regular light bulbs. We buy them when they go on sale, and end up paying about $1.50 for each. However, they last longer, and we save about $18 a month on our electric bill. It's not a ton, I know, but it's not too bad, either.
- Programmable thermostat. This is a great way to make sure that your home works on a schedule for heating and cooling. You can program the thermostat to come on half an hour before you get back from work, or wherever you have been, and that means that your home won't be hot or cool for someone who isn't there.
