census tract

U.S. Bureau of the Census subdivision of a densely populated city. Census tracts are jointly defined by the Census Bureau and local groups. The specifications are that census tracts have uniform social and economic characteristics, have identifiable boundaries, and can be defined so that all census tracts within a county cover the entire county. The average population of a census tract is 43,300. There were 49,961 census tracts in the 1990 Census.
