TIMBER EXPORT RESTRICTIONS?

Vice-President of Congress Rodrigo Castillo Aguilar suggested a 25% reduction of timber exportation for 2001, a 50% reduction in 2002, and a 75% reduction in 2003, to protect Honduras' forests. The American Embassy comments: "Given that many in the private sector support increasing Honduran

timber exports, it is unlikely that Honduras will decrease the rate of timber production. The country lacks a comprehensive sustainable forestry strategy and has inadequate laws and institutional infrastructure to enforce one."
