OFFSHORE BETTING CO. EXPANDS.

An offshore betting company is expanding its Jamaica operations, reports CANA (August 27, 1998). English Sports Information Processors Ltd. said that it was hiring 150 more Jamaicans to support its current staff of 300 and was adding more office space. "Business continues to boom," says Vice President

and General Manager Tom Lanford. The company is based in the Montego Bay free zone and is operated by a group of U.S. businessmen headed by Dennis Atiyeh of Pennsylvania. It takes wagers from around the world via satellite telephone on sporting events, national elections, the Oscars awards and the stock market. Lanford says he expects approval of an application for the company to operate its own V-SAT (satellite earth station). English Sports is now served by Digiport International, also located in the free zone.
