TRANSFER OF U.S. ARMY UNITS FROM PANAMA.

The transfer of U.S. Army units from Panama to Puerto Rico got underway in May, and they will all be in their new headquarters at Ft. Buchanan and Roosevelt Roads Naval Air Base by August 1, reports CANA (April 18, 1999). By August 1, 788 Army South officials, 410 uniformed personnel and

378 civilians will be transferred to their new offices in Ft. Buchanan, to be supported by 233 National Guard officials. U.S Army Special Operations Command, which includes the "Green Berets," will assign 283 Army officials and 26 civilians to Roosevelt Roads in Ceiba. Puerto Rico will be the new headquarters of the U.S. Army South, part of the U.S. Southern Command which is preparing to leave Panama by December 31 in keeping with the Panama Canal Treaty.
