ICREW the professional association of women who serve the industrial and commercial real estate market in New Jersey recently celebrated their 20"' Anniversary at the Olde Mill Inn in Basking Ridge, N.J.
In 1981 there were very few women in the field of commercial real estate. Those who had the courage to forge ahead in the male-dominated field were learning the thrill of the deal--putting it all together--negotiating, signing the lease or closing the sale--it was a high because you made it happen.
Slowly these women began to find each other as they talked among themselves. By 1982 founding past president, Roberta Hyman of Galesi Realty and several other founding members decided to form an organization of women that would represent all aspects of the commercial real estate industry. The organization would be dedicated to networking and education thereby giving women better access to the high-level leaders of the industry.
It took a good deal of time putting together the bylaws, working with attorney, Jim Checki, who filed with the IRS to give the group non-profit status. Marvin Klein acted as the group's accountant for many years. Mel Hyman designed the group's logo. These professionals graciously provided their services pro-bono. ICREW is grateful to these men for not only their generosity, but for having the confidence in this group of women who were forging their way into an area previously dominated by males.
