Where Do System Standards Go From Here?

The goal of any standards group should be to generate end-user value.

Successful standards grow the overall market because they concentrate on generating end-user value in two basic ways:

* By reducing

the cost and complexity of products or product components.

* By enabling businesses to develop new products or services.

Component-based standards from the IEEE, IETF and W3C have seen much more success in the past 25 years than have the system-based standards from the ITU-T, 3GPP and OMA, as shown in Figure 1A and 1B. Trillions of dollars in product and service revenues have been generated by companies that based their offerings on Internet Protocol (IP), the Web and Ethernet, among other component-based standards.
