MICHAEL GREECE: The smartest thing I ever did as a participant in a small business was join a company that had an employee-owned firm. It's smart for me because, quietly, if I work hard, I get to share in the joys of our success, and because the profits of an employee-owned business are divided up among the employees every year. But secondarily, in a selfish way, it helps me hire people, because I can, because it's something that does get across, even to young people, is the notion that the harder you work, the more financially you will benefit personally. A lot of firms don't have employee-owned systems. They promise bonuses, and they come and go, but the fact that we are all owners of the firm, and we all share in the profits has a unifying effect in making us, in allowing us to work hard, and feel like we're, each of us are going to benefit as a result of our mutual success.
