Meetup.com and a Famous Company!

A little birdie just dropped something in my ear. An email just went out to all of the Organizers at Meetup.com. In case you don't know Meetup.com lets anyone set up meetups anywhere on any subject. What are meetups? They are just people with common interests getting together and enjoying themselves and their interests. It has been quite a phenomenon over the last few years and I myself have participated in a few meetups and they are a lot of fun! Well what's the news? Here it is quoted from Scott Heiferman's, Co-Founder & CEO, email, "...there's some more good news that might happen next week. It's about a famous company that is so impressed with Meetups that they might help us out. Their interest is something for the Meetup community to be proud of, and I'll let you know if it happens." What does this mean? Well it could be they picked up a fantastic advertising deal but I think it means that one of the big boys finally will be picking this company up. After all it has proved itself with 1.8 million members, 9167 meetup groups and 4538 meetup topics. Now those are numbers anyone can appreciate. My guess is that Yahoo buys Meetup.com. It makes sense. They picked up Flickr, del.icio.us, Konfabulator and Webjay. Meetup.com just fits in too nicely. Of course it could be Apple buys Meetup.com or Amazon buys Meetup.com or Google buys Meetup.com or even Microsoft buys Meetup.com but my money in on Yahoo buys Meetup.com. Of course I could be completely wrong and it could be some kind of partnership but no matter what it is going to be an interesting time. If one of the big boys isn't picking these guys up they better take a look! I have personally met Scott and I can tell you that he is a fantastic entrepreneur and he is very focused on his customers. I can only hope that he and his team meet with great success over the next week. Disclaimer: I have no vested interest in Meetup.com other then participating in Meetups. I was not asked to write about this but have been watching this company with interest for some time. After all, to me it epitomizes the modern tech startup. - Doug Kersten Meetup.com and a Famous Company! "Meetup.com helps people find others who share their interest or cause, and form lasting, influential, local community groups that regularly meet face-to-face. We believe that the world will be a better place when everyone has access to a people-powered local Meetup Group. That's our goal. Meetup Groups help people: * Find others who share their interests * Get involved locally * Learn, teach, and share things * Make friends and have fun * Rise up, stand up, unite, and make a difference * Be a part of something bigger - both locally and globally We're proud to give more power to the people and we believe it's possible to make a profit and make a difference. Meetup.com earns money from: * Meetup Groups who rely on us to help them create great Meetups and great local groups * Partner organizations that use Meetup.com services to grow and strengthen their communities * Sponsors who buy unobtrusive text ads relevant to Meetup Group members"

I think that Ebay is a great way to invest in. You can sell and buy stuff in huge amounts and then resell it. I have to agree with Doug, congrats Ebay.

Meetup.com is doing some nice things. I think web can be a great facilitator for getting parties to gether offline. What do they say -- 90% of word-of-mouth marketing is done offline?
