Big store or small? Why consumers care

By Jon Bonné

"Therese Bourassa-Bernier has survived Home Depot. She and her family, whose Bourassa Hardware store has served New Bedford, Mass. since 1924, watched the do-it-yourself chain arrive in town. They watched Builder?s Square come and go. Now Lowe?s is coming."

- Walmart is a tough one. As is Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, etc. How can a small business compete? Create a niche, do something unique. This may be harder said then done but in the new retail environment in the U.S. there is not much else you can do. -ed.
