Maryland: Panel seeks better defense for indigents

A blue ribbon panel submitted findings to the state court system that recommended higher funding for indigent defense.

Maryland Chief Judge Robert M. Bell appointed the panel after the legislature turned down his earlier requests to increase the budget for public defenders.

The special

committee also recommended creation of a pretrial release program that would free space in jails and trim court dockets for those charged with misdemeanors.
