Strategic Business Blogging

If you have a business, you need a blog. A blog can help position you as the expert in your field. You already know a great deal about the products you sell or the services you offer. A blog gives you the opportunity to easily share that knowledge with thousands of interested people across the globe.

Blog Copywriting an Essential Skill
December 30, 2006, 4:58 PM
In the offline marketing world, copywriters are a hallowed lot, at least the good ones. Not so much online. I recall a few years back reading about the different types of Internet-related jobs in terms of salaries paid, and copywriting was way down the list. In the offline world copywriters worth their salt can make a fortune! What does this have to do with blogging? Simply that honing your blog copywriting skills can make your blog more popular and, if you're in the business of making money with it, more profitable as a result. Two blogs I've found recently that ...

Pay Per Post Requires Disclosure
December 18, 2006, 10:10 AM
Maybe their conscience got the best of them, or maybe the FTC's ruling did it, but controversial PayPerPost.com is now requiring disclosure . In case you've not been following this issue, PayPerPost.com is a site that gets bloggers to write posts about companies and products for a fee. The problem -- and there is more than one -- is that PPP didn't require full-disclosure. Hence, a blogger could write a post proclaiming the benefits of a certain product or company without informing the reader that, presumably, the reason they were doing it was because they were being paid. TechCrunch ...

Bloglines Looking for New Direction and New Director
December 12, 2006, 6:10 AM
I use Bloglines as my RSS reader of choice. When I logged into my account the other day, I saw an ad touting the headline "Come work for Bloglines." Seems they are looking for a business director, someone to give strategic direction to the app. As you may know, Bloglines was acquired by Ask.com last year from then CEO Mark Fletcher. Mark's dream for the site was to turn it into the "homepage of the 21st century," whatever that means. However, Mark left the company last June to take care of his cats and pursue new ...

Blogs Push Surge in Social Media Marketing
December 11, 2006, 6:55 AM
Toby Bloomberg used to be a blogging consultant. Now, she's a social media marketing consultant. So is B L Ochman , as are others I know. I mention that to say these ladies know which way the wind is blowing. They understand something Toby said I predicted some years ago, that blogging would become part of a larger landscape called social media. (To be truthful, I have no idea what I said, but she says I said it.) She (er...I) was right, it has. My good friend and business partner (he's my boss, actually) Richard Nacht has written ...

Big Changes at the Blog Herald
December 09, 2006, 6:26 AM
This falls under the "what doesn't get reported the same day it happens is old news" category, but I wanted to bring you up to speed on some changes happening with the Blog Herald . Blog Herald is one of my all-time favorite blogs. If you want to know what's happening on the business end of the blogosphere, that's certainly one good place to go. Recently, the site got sold to UK outfit, Bloggy Network Ltd . (Here's a word from the new owners about the sale.) The company that purchased Blog Herald from founder Duncan Riley only ...

More on Blogkits
December 08, 2006, 12:53 PM
Yesterday, I introduced you to Blogkits, an advertising service which promotes itself as a viable alternative to Google Adsense. Blogkits creator, Jim Kukral, sent me the following information in an email, and I decided to pass it along to you verbatim: BlogKits is the first, and only affiliate marketing network built for bloggers. It's an alternative monetization method for millions (99% of all blogs) of low-traffic bloggers who aren't expert marketers. Why is BlogKits different than a normal affiliate network? BlogKits ends the confusion, makes it simple & provides the best options that benefit the blogger. Here's how. When a ...

Blog Prognostications for 2007
December 08, 2006, 6:10 AM
Some of the Fellows over at the Society for New Communications Research (SNCR) have made predictions about blogging in the year ahead . (BTW, I use the term "Fellows" as a proper noun, because it's some of SNCR's Research Fellows of which I speak.) One of those, Debbie Weil , had this to say... "We´re unhooking from our computers and will be getting much more online info via our cell phones, PDAs, etc. Beware the marketer who doesn´t remember this and doesn´t format blog posts, etc. to be read on a cell phone or Treo! The corporate blogosphere has gone ...

Entrepreneur Jim Kukral Launches BlogKits
December 07, 2006, 12:33 PM
Tired of making a paltry sum each month using Google Adsense? If so, you may want to try a new service, Blogkits , the "world's first true performance marketing network built just for bloggers." My good friend and serial entrepreneur, Jim Kukral , just launched the service and promises you'll fare better using Blogkits than Adsense. Getting started is easy too. Just follow these steps: - Signup your blog & get approved -Grab tracking code & place it in your blog template -Earn whenever a sale is made Unlike Federated Media , which goes after high-traffic blogs, BlogKits reaches out ...

Disclosure in the Blogosphere...More on the Pay Per Post Debate
December 07, 2006, 6:47 AM
I promise I won't keep harping on this, but I have to get it out of my system, so bear with me. And forgive the fact that I'm just now jumping on this bandwagon. PayPerPost.com ...yes, them again, has created a website called DisclosurePolicy.org , which is ostensibly designed to address the disclosure issue as it relates to bloggers being paid for posting and other forms of blog marketing that may lack complete transparency. In a October post, TechCrunch accused PPP of doing something not unlike the tobacco companies , in that they create a "smoke and mirrors" marketing scheme ...

Blogging is the Last Form of Honest Advertising...at Least It Used to Be
December 06, 2006, 6:09 AM
This whole pay per post phenomenon has gotten me really intrigued. It seems PPP companies are coming out of the woodwork. Let's see, there's PayPerPost.com , CreamAid.com , ReviewMe.com , and coming soon to the blogosphere near you, LoudLaunch.com . What each of these has in common is that they all pay bloggers to write about advertisers. PayPerPost.com was the first to the current scene, and they got roundly trashed in the blogosphere for not requiring full disclosure and for putting pressure on bloggers to paint advertisers in a positive light. (BTW, PayPerPost was not the first one ...

I would add that blogs are conversational, they don't follow the old newspaper article model. I liken it to how you write an email, expecting a response.

Blogging for real estate agents is becoming widely accepted. However, adoption of blogging systems and tools is slower than one would think for an industry that is as competitive as real estate. The reason for this is simply that the majority of real estate agents understand traditional paper transactions and marketing tools much better than new online promotional mediums. Adoption is happening, and there are a number of marketing organizations that are making the transition as easy as possible for REALTORS®. It just takes a bit of time to make this market familiar with technology tools that generate sales. Brian N. 4MySales.com A Simple System to Close More Sales ...

Just a little correction - "Blogosphere - The comos of all blogs" ... change "comos" to "cosmos." I liked your point that a blogger is a blogger, and that it doesn't take lots of experience or a certain mindset to be one. Anybody can dance if they just move their body - no training required. To blog well, on the other hand, can some time to learn.

Paul, I've read about a hundred pages of Jeremy Wright's book and I agree with your assessment so far. At first the "layperson's" language annoyed me a little, but then I thought that he's probably trying to make the idea of blogging for business more accessible to the general public - and what better format to use than a printed book in addressing the kind of crowd that might not (yet) believe in the benefits of electronic publishing? I plan to discuss "Blog Marketing" more at my blog. Thanks for providing an initial take on it.

I belonged to the "oh! I don't understand the blog business" game. And I am already suing the past tense!! I am beginning to get hooked for no reason. I have a few questions, answers to which will help me know if i am moving in the right direction..am I pursuing the right school of thought or not... FYI I run two home business websites. Q.1 Will participating in blogs and getting my URL as a result of writing a comment will amount to one way linking? Helping my business move up the search engines that much faster? Especially if the comments and url are on a blog page with a high page rank and similarly themed? Q.2. Can a blog be part of my already exisiting websites? Or will I have to buy a separate domain name for running blogs? will I need to learn a different language to start building a blog?

I read your blogs often and test out your suggestions on my own blog. I have not yet determined how frequently to blog. My average is seven blogs per week. Generally, I make more entries on the week-ends. Since my business is a small niche market, anger management, it is easy to stay at the top in all of the search engines. I have not yet perfected the art of getting others to comment on my site yet my stats remain high. Thanks for your good work.
By: George Andersong on Four Essentials to Successful Blogging
Good stuff once again Paul. I have generally been opposed to pointing to other bloggers or their sources unless it was very compelling information. I have stumbled onto too many sites that are nothing more than a point elsewhere service. But it does seem to work for some people as I often see the same articles over and over again with no real dissenting opinions or new information. The commenter's seem to be a network of like minded people seeking as many outlets or use of keywords to attract others to the network. Not saying its wrong, but just seems a little lazy to let a few good minds do the work, and the rest of the blog world to comment on it. I would hope the key of relationship building is to find others who have a similar voice and share readers while offering separate opportunities for the reader beyond the blog pages.
By: eSearing on Four Essentials to Successful Blogging
The part on building relationships is vital for a blog to succeed. Its pretty intresting the new social networks that are developing. I wonder if there is any research into how it will change society?

One more R, although you mention it, I think it deserves to be its own "R" in your list. RSS. I can't imagine blogs without it. Without RSS, you would have to go bookmark all your blogs. Yech. Anyways, good list.
By: Frank Ross on Four Essentials to Successful Blogging
Nice "R" tips, Paul. I'd like to add one more - I can't decide whether to call it Respond or Reciprocate. It's related to your plug for relationship building. When other bloggers ask me a question, I try to go the extra mile by not anly answering, but maybe also posting about the issue and encouraging further discussion. The snowball effect loves blogs. I've noticed that my most popular posts are the ones where I've tried hardest to give my visitors a rewarding experience. (Hmm, maybe Reward is another good "R" tip - offer prizes from time to time ...) ...

From an internet marketers POV it would be nice if the email and RSS readers allowed us to push our ads and affilialte programs or some level of customization. Currently we have to use the blog posts as advertisements to do so. I personally like bloglet.com for email subscription/distribution due to its simplicity. Adding the RSS chicklets available from feedburner is just one collection of rss readers, you can add the code from others too (and probably should). Give your readers as many options as possible. Some even have affiliate programs because they sell other services which can further your income potential. It will be interesting to see how this segment of the market develops. Perhaps subscibers could be charged a minimal fee to get "ad free" feeds.

The author of this blog is formidable looking person with formidable opinions and expectations and forecasts. That email has not gone anywhere since he made that forcast shows that he is hasty and misconcieved like all other people involved with the debvelopment of the Internet. I've different opinions that I express freely in my blog s one of which is at http://www.newerawisp.blogspot.com/ If the internet, with my vision, becomes a reality the cellphone will take the place of personal computers since there would be no need for them. Hackers would have to find something else to keep busy and the Music and Motion Picture Industries would not find it necessary to sue any body for piracy since it would be impossible to download anything off the internet.

Hurray! Love that final quote. It frustrates me to no end when I see people looking for magic pixie dust (you know, the elusive brand of dust that requires only a single, light dusting in order to generate unbelievable profits).

Blogging (and the whole Internet for that matter) has revolutionized marketing. But, each business is unique, with its own objectives, strengths, weaknesses, and competitive situation. Therefor each business will have a marketing mix uniquely its own and will implement it in a unique way.
By: Bobette Kyle on Blogs in the Marketing Mix
"...advertisers are reluctant to buy space on blogs and other consumer-generated products, or advertise on them, because of the possibility that consumers will post negative comments."

Wow. I wonder if these same companies are reluctant to advertise in other ways because they are afraid people will talk badly about them? ;-) Makes me wonder about the quality of those reluctant advertisers.

I would think smart advertisers would embrace the idea that their products could be commented upon ... if an advertiser's products are useful, then the majority of comments should be positive.

The possibility of permanent, warm fuzzy comments for the whole world to read sounds like a huge plus to me.

Social Impacts of Global Outsourcing

I attended a conference on Global Outsourcing at Washington DC, held on Sep 15- Sep 17, 2005, organized by the Center for Global Outsourcing:
http://www.outsourceglobal.org.

A talk by Christopher C. Foster Deputy Secretary Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, cfoster@choosemaryland.org, impressed me very highly.

The abstract of his talk as excerpted is:
The transition from regionalized labor based economies of the Industrial Age to globalized knowledge economies of the Information Age are accelerating the impacts on social systems and infrastructure investments on a global scale. At a recent global Biotechnology conference in Philadelphia over 18,000 attendees were present as 48 States from the U.S. along with 61 Nations from around the world declared themselves are Biotech centers of excellence. Investments in Intellectual Infrastructure are accelerating from Beijing to Bangkok to Bangalore. These massive investments and fierce competition in the global knowledge economy require a complex Intellectual Ecosystem to develop, attract, and retain the requisite highly educated workforce. This highly educated workforce of the knowledge economy has completely different needs and expectations compared to the preceding labor based economy, and is much more mobile. The risk of an economically bipolar population is tremendous in more populous countries such as China or India and the scale of the social issues are daunting. As Nations around the world strive to move up the economic value chain, what are the issues and responsibilities of public and private sector leaders?

Putting it in my words succinctly the points he raised are:

1. USA is an absolute model of Knowledge Society
2. The world is having a Global Economy where there are no boundaries
3. The movement of money, material & information is seamless
4. But there are transportation bottlenecks, at least for the heavy material loads of shipments

Hence the questions that arise in my mind are:

1. Where do we go from here or what is likely to happen to the world trade as we know of today, specially in light of above # 4?
2. What macroeconomic & political implications are going to be there
3. Ho do we prosper under the new order of things if there is going to be one.

I believe the world order is going to have to be rearranged. India & China are emerging as the global power houses. They will have where with all with respect to economic muscle, knowledge power & perhaps political will to shape things if not around the world then at least near around their geographic neighborhoods. On top of that the developed world, developing nations & the world?s sole super power is not going to be sitting idly & twiddling its thumbs.

Hence I would welcome any comments & engagements in developing this scenario further.

After reading this post, I realize it's time to get serious about categories. Question: with Wordpress 1.5 that I use, it appears you can assign posts to more than one category. I like this but am afraid that it could lead to "duplicate content" penalties from search engines. Is this fear warranted? Also, if I move a post from one categry to another, does that screw up seach engine indexing?

I agree with you about the importance of blogs. There probaly is no quicker way to disseminate informaton than through a blog. Whether it be just informing your customers of current product information or if needed updating the public of urgent information.
Blogs go into our homes and work places informing individuals 24/7!

Business blogs can also be leveraged in a couple of very interesting ways.

A good business blog is a great way to establish yourself as an expert in your field.

Also, regularly posting to a blog over a period of time will develop your writing skills. It will also give you a body of work that can easily be turned into articles, books and other communication tools.

Even if no one were ever to read your blog it would still be of value.

Interesting advice. The pointers of Jane also do serve a purpose. However I cannot understand how to "have celebrity authorship". Could you clarify? Again it all depends on what the person blogging wants. If he or she is just penning down a few thoughts, it may not be at all about traffic, rather it would be more of a release mechanism and any by product by way of someone chancing on the blog and commenting or offering solutions would be gratis.

I am completely fed up with the sheer volume of spam blogs on Blogger. Even though Blogger implemented the flag feature just a few days ago, many of the spam blogs have developed a way to cover this feature, thus rendering it useless. Pop-ups on Blogger sites are also an enormous problem. I have to run anti-adware and anti-spyware frequently, and can encounter hundreds of problems a day. I hope Blogger can find a solution soon, before legitimate bloggers start seaching for a new arena.

This is a great educational post on comment and spam blogs. I note that you're also using number verification on this blog to prevent comment spam. Just an FYI for those that might be interested, the word/number verification such as the one employed by this blog to prove you're a human (not a spam robot) is called "Captcha." If you want to learn more about Captcha, there's a site devoted entirely to the Captcha project at http://www.captcha.net .

Right on, Paul. After a year of receiving our leadership coaching tips, here is what three subscribers said about "What's in it for me":

"I have enjoyed reading the tips. I find they provide insight in dealing with both my personal issues, as well as, my professional career. Many of them help when dealing with employees. I think the tips will help anyone who is interested in or already in a leadership position. As leaders, we must hold ourselves to a higher standard than we hold our subordinates, in order to set the example we want to work toward."

"I am constantly amazed at how God seems to know JUST WHAT I NEED, and very often your message is JUST WHAT I NEED at the time.
Thank you so much for making a difference in my, and others' lives."

"I want to thank you for sending your wisdom to me for a year. It has been valuable. You write like a friend and I always look forward to it. I have used your thoughts to clarify my thinking and to inspire me. The days when things weren't going so well, your e-mail would lift my spirits. I have passed your messages on to others as many probably do. That way, your positive influence grows."

Great post Paul. Thanks for letting us know about this.

I see in the report business blogs are at about 3% market share of blog readers.

Do you have any thoughts about how far and how fast that share might grow?

Thanks again!

I'm in the process of an experiment on my blogs. Can I make money on blog advertising? I'm giving it one year. In early October 2004 I put Google Adsense on my blogs. So far, I've earned very little (less than $30). However, I also use Blogads and Blogkits and have more than paid for my Typepad hosting service for the year. So, I'm not going to get rich, but at least I have the expense of running my blogs covered.

Just FIY, IceRocket will remain and they will launch a *new* site called BlogScour according to Blake from IceRocket. Quote "There seems to be some confusion about what we are doing. IceRocket will remain as is and we will launch BlogScour.com as a whole seperate site dedicated to blogs.

People that are only interested in our blog features will be able to access all of them via BlogScour in the near future. It is going to be the place to be for blogs."

This was posted on Steve Rubel's blog here: http://www.micropersuasion.com/2005/07/icerocket_mark_.html ...
By: Chrispian on IceRocket to Become BlogScour
I think the confusion came from Mark Cuban's comment on his Blog Maverick site:

"This was, is and will continue to be the focus of Blogs.icerocket.com (it will be renamed www.blogscour.com, but we arent sure when)."

As far as the purpose of the blogs.icerocket.com site, he goes on to say in a subsequent post:

"This post of course is a long way of saying that despite all the evaluations going on around the blogosphere, blogs.icerocket.com will focus on providing a service to the majority of internet users who don't blog, or who blog as a social experience.

In particular we will focus on supporting business users who want a continuous feed of fresh information relating to those things that are important to them." ...

Paul -- thanks for posting this article. In spite of the negative comments against business blogging I decided to start my own anyway, thinking that the increased traffic alone would make it worthwhile. My blog is too new to see if that's going to work, but I've seen personal benefit already -- making frequent posts helps me to define my own value and position on copywriting issues. I hope to see many more benefits this year. Thanks again!

It's interesting that you bring this up Paul, since the same issue applies to web pages, press releases, pdf files and any other document that can be indexed by a search engine.

A similar issue occurs when deciding to focus on a brand or keywords.

Hear, hear! I could never figure out why that option was there and always recommend against it. Like you said, who cares what date a post is on?. Plus, if one starts to lag in the posting department, it shows on the calendar what days there are no posts! It could reveal that one is a lazy blogger.

Paul, this is excellent advice which I wish I had know when I started my blogs. I've referred my blog clients to your previous post on categories so they get started correctly.

I'd like to see a tutorial on the mechanics of Technorati and putting tags in your posts. If you've already done one, I guess I missed it and hope you can point me to the right place. Your style is so clear, I always learn a lot from you.
By: Denise Wakeman on Blog Post Categories, Don't Make My Mistake
Hi Paul. I agree with Denise. Very good advice. In an effort to be creative and unique, we often create titles and categories for our writings that are unclear. They may sound fun but they're not alway practical. I know I'm guilty of this. Good thing we write in a keyword-focused world so we keep things simple and clear and easier for our readers to navigate!
By: Kevin Stirtz on Blog Post Categories, Don't Make My Mistake
I agree with Kevin. You will see more blog teams like Allbusiness.com has set up, where the best bloggers contribute to the traffic and relevance of established, well recognized players in the market. This is how business blogs will drive 'business value' and become more valuable in their own right.

Hi Paul. Nice post about our current state of affairs for business blogs. One thing I see happening is that more tools and or websites will appear that will help filter in the quality blogs.
