9.Have a conversation with your cold caller to determine what constitutes a quality appointment. Be clear of what your expectations are in terms of number of appointments per week or per month. Be aware of the fact that your expectations may not be realistic and might need adjusting. Understand that true cold calling is a slow process done over time. You can’t nor should you expect to hit your goals every week as there are dry spells in every sales and marketing.

Numa Financial Group is another great resource like this one. Numa Financial Group is committed to creating ways for small businesses to raise capital, and to raise it at the speed that they need it, under terms that both fit their preferred ideal scenarios and maximize returns for investors. They are committed to creating ways for small businesses to raise capital and to raise it at the speed that they need it, which is sometimes a different timetable from the timetable of conventional channels of financing. At first glance, many businesses appear to be impossible to finance. Potential capital often lies hidden from view, waiting for the right creative thinking to unlock it and put it to use. Numa Financial Group operates from the assumption that there is almost always a way to fund a venture, but that it might not always be as obvious as applying for a loan at a bank. If you are a small business that has been in business for 6 months or more, and are in need of some capital (and perhaps under time pressure) please visit www.numafinancial.com for more information, or email sarah.hilzinger@gmail.com to submit your information.

Personally, as an individual and not a business owner, I am not very keen on cold calling. Just the terminology 'cold calling' turns me off. It probably has a whole lot to do with my own personal experiences receiving cold calls. In my opinion, the company who intends to generate business from cold calls should put substantial focus on the capability of the individual who will be doing the cold calling. They should ensure that this individual is not only charismatic but capable of sounding like he or she is not reading from a script. This I find to be a total turn off.

Hello, I recently had a booth at a trade show where I held a competition for 50% off of my product. I am a wedding planner. I want to do some follow up to each bride that entered. I was thinking of calling and letting them know they came in 2nd place winning 25% off (who says there has to be only one person in second place). These calls really wouldn't be "cold calls" as they must be SOMEWHAT interested to enter. Do you have any tips for me? Thanks, Shannon ...

You nailed it right on the spot! So many businesses never ask their clients/customers if they are pleased with their work. You deserve congratulations for making it through the red tape of trying to get someone on the phone that cares. I hope that you get your refund because you deserve it for being treated so badly. I believe that the days of good customer service are gone and those companies that strive to give all their customers great service are few and far between. They all talk the talk, but they don't follow through. It's the companies that start out caring that often grow and become so big that they can't keep up with the service their employees are giving. If they can remember what gave them the opportunity to grow, they will go far.

A rule of thumb for effective customer service and for building customer trust and loyalty: Never lie to or attempt to deceive your customer. Also, know your company's policies and procedures before you answer a customer's question or address a concern they have. If you do not know what your company's policies or procedures are, you should ask before you provide your customer an answer. I had a customer service agent of a company I used to be a satisfied customer with either blatantly lie to me to get money, or they were ignorant of their company's policies and procedures. To make matters worse, two other agents of the same company either lied to me or did not know the policies or procedures to follow. Their deception or ignorance nearly sent an innocent mentally ill man to jail and cost me over $150.00 personally. I contacted the CEO's office of the company and did receive a check for the $150.00, however, if this innocent mentally ill man had gone to jail-even for one or two days, no amount of money would compensate for the harm done by their actions. So, please tell the truth AND if you do not know the policies of procedures of the company you work for, ASK the appropriate person what they are before you tell a customer.

Thanks for this nice idea. It's important to arrange a business meeting. Many new ideas may come out of it. There is an annual membership fee, but it is worth giving. 200 people are at a meeting and each has his time to talk about the prospect of his service. Still this is a great opportunity for him to speak out to so many people and to get clients. I hope they will help each other and never forget unity is power.

By: Call Cruncher on Unrealistic Goals or Finding the Needle in the Haystack Part Two
Hi Tony, Excellent point on the necessity of literature being sent before a meeting. Some salespeople think requesting it is a stall tactic, but it really helps buyers focus on what the vendor has to offer. Also it is the vendor's second chance to make a good impression (the call itself being first) so the literature sent should represent the company well.
By: Matthew W. Grant on Unrealistic Goals or Finding the Needle in the Haystack Part Two
Tony -- Good piece on postcards, which we have used with devastating success. Why? Frankly busy people often don't have time to read a 1,000-word brochure. They just need enough information and imagery to take the NEXT STEP...visiting a Web site, sending an email or picking up a phone. If your creative is well-researched and strong, you can make quite an impression with a 4x6 postcard--at a fraction of the cost of a bulky direct-mail brochure or letter package. Another tip...use vertical market postcards to get a higher response and stretch your marketing budget. -- Henry Eason, Eason Communications LLC ...

I remembered there is a scene in the movie "Forty Year Old Virgin" where the hero Andy calls a woman and she took him as a telemarketer and started yelling at him. The first thing that came to my mind reading your post was that scene. I think the most problematic part of telemarketing is that when a sales person makes a call the person on the other side may not be in a plesant mood to answer all the questions.

Telemarketing and cold calling is a core capability that many small businesses miss out on. By tapping into the capabilities of telephony (for example, Skype's FREE calling nation wide within the US), a company can omptimize their existing abilities and personell to maximize their revenue. Telemarketing, in all of its different capabilities, needs to be managed effectively. To do so, chosing the RIGHT CRM is incredibly important. From a telemarketing standpoint, most CRMs fall short. Salesforce.com, Act!, and Goldmine all have failure points, though they are excellent CRMs .. they are not focused on telemarketing. Interestingly enough, I actually just finished writing about this particular topic in my blog -- has some details on software that works very well for telemarketing and solves many of the CRM problems. With the right consideration and weighing, having the right CRM can certainly be a positive impact -- but make sure that your processes and collaboration is in place first. -- Philippe ...

Hi Tony: Great post again. Another question I am always asked is, "What is your guarantee and how many leads can I expect to receive?" My response is always, "It depends." "It depends on what?" Well, it depends on: - How competitive your prices are in the market - The quality of your products and services - The quality of the list we are contacting - The amount of competition in the market - If you've effectively identified your target market - If there is a great need or want for your products - Your reputation - Your competitors reputation - And the list goes on. Telemarketers are not responsible for the above control points, no matter how great the company is. Good companies will provide a trial period for you before you move into any long-term contract agreement. During the trial period, you should work hard with the company to adjust or eliminate any possible boundaries that are blocking you from reaching your sales goals. This is another reason why telemarketing companies are reluctant to work on a commission basis. If your prices, products, services or any of the above are not appropriate for telemarketing - you're not going to receive leads, appointments or sales in the quantity that makes you profitable. ...If they are, telemarketing can be the blockbusting force that drives sales for your business. Also, keep in mind that any company that is willing to take on your business for commission is probably desperate for new business. What does this tell you about the quality of their services? ...we're in the telemarketing business - if a telemarketing company can't sell their own services, how are they going to sell yours? Great post Tony...keep up the good work. Mark.
By: Mark on "I don´t work on commission" and other reasons why a good telemarketer is hard to find (and keep)"?¦
Tony: This is great advice. Recently I've changed all of my scripts to be more along the lines of question and answer. Since changing our style of telemarketing, we've experience almost a 20% increase in leads. Amazing...I would never have thunk it possible. Asking questions allow you to open up the prospect to talk about themselves, their accomplishments etc. It allows you build bond and rapport, overcome objections and sound as least like a telemarketer as possible. The trick is to make the conversation move naturally and not to ask patronizing questions like, "Do you think police do a great job by risking their lives to keep us safe?" Don't ask questions that have only one answer. Like Tony said, the questions need to be probing so you can overcome objections and discover what the real wants and desires of the prospect truly are. Great post...more people should take this approach!

When you run seminars for exposure purposes, do you ever repeat the same seminar at the same venue? If so, how many times? I've been doing seminars in biology and plug a book I wrote at some point in the seminar. I view the seminar as a vehicle for getting business exposure. However, I'm finding that re-inventing a new seminar each time is a lot of work and that I get a lot of repeat attendees that I've seen before, rather than a new "crop" of contacts. Any insights? Liked the tips in your article and feel motivated to continue on now. Thanks.
