BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 2001

Birmingham Steel Corporation (NYSE:BIR) today announced that Wynn E. Calland has been appointed Vice President - Regulatory Affairs. Calland, age 48, joined Birmingham Steel in October 2000 as Director - Environmental,

Health and Safety.

Calland holds Master of Science degrees in Meteorology and Oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, and also earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Naval Academy. Prior to joining Birmingham Steel, Calland served as Corporate Director - Environmental, Safety and Health for IMC Chemicals, Inc. in Overland Park, Kansas. Calland also previously served as Director, Administration for North American Chemical Company and as Compliance and Environmental Manager for the United States Navy.

Birmingham Steel operates in the mini-mill sector of the steel industry and conducts operations at facilities located across the United States. The common stock of Birmingham Steel is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "BIR."
