Obama's SBA Pick Doesn't Make Everyone Happy

Friday, December 26 2008

You just can't please all the people all the time, can you? There's a ton of controversy being bantered about on small business blogs about President Elect Obama's pick for SBA Administrator -- Venture Capitalist Karen Mills. According to the Independent Street blog over at WSJ, Ms. Mills has an extensive business background along with a Harvard MBA.

Ms. Mills, who hails from the family that invented Tootsie Rolls, was founding partner of New York private equity firm Solera Capital and is current chair of the Maine Governor’s Council on Competitiveness. She also founded Maine private equity firm MMP Group in 1993. She has an economics degree from Harvard Radcliffe, along with a Harvard M.B.A., according to various media reports. She’s also served as a director at many companies, large and small, including Latina Media Ventures LLC, Annie’s Homegrown and Scotts Miracle Gro. (You can read the entire article here.)

So what do I think? I won't be hasty and judge it to be a good or bad pick for now. My judgment will be based on action and the action won't even begin until after January 20, 2009. I'm hopeful her appointment means that the SBA will be kicked back into shape and serve the small business owners of America like it used to. I'm also hoping the role gets elevated to a full cabinet position like it was during the Clinton administration. We'll see. Stay tuned for more on this topic.

In the meantime, what do you think about the appointment?
