Summary

The use of cards for payments at the point of sale and for Internet purchases stood at EUR170 billion, up some 5%, due to a growing habit of using cards as a means of payment, which in turn resulted in lower growth in cash withdrawals.

Across most sectors, the average transaction value saw another decline in 2004 as a result of greater card use also for the payment of smaller amounts such as grocery or online purchases of books and CDs.
