Texas Commerce Bank's (TCB) incorporation into Chemical Banking Corp has helped it recover from the Texas energy and real estate bust of the eighties. Chemical's international reach gives TCB access to financial markets worldwide. But to survive the competitive Texas banking business, TCB must grow its retail business. The bank is boosting its consumer loan activity and will soon begin offering mutual funds and annuities.

If failed banks had headstones, the Texas Plain would look like a graveyard. InterFirst, RepublicBank, Allied Bancshares and MCorp all perished in the overheated
