This year's Mortgage Banking Technology All-Stars have one thing in common. They're the industry professionals who transformed eMortgages from an idea into a product. *** Collectively, they've been the Sisyphus of the lending industry, endlessly pushing paper from the mortgage process--rather than a boulder up a hill. When the MERS[R] System logged its 10,000th eNote in April 2008, it seemed like the boulder might finally stay at the top of the hill. *** By the end of 2008, the ground beneath the mortgage market had given way. In today's market, few lenders have the energy to go paperless. But our 17 Technology All-Stars would argue that those companies that continue to pursue eMortgages are going to end up at the top of the hill when the market rights itself again. *** Together, these 17 people have contributed countless hours to the Mortgage Industry Standards Maintenance Organization (MISMO[R]), creating the legal and business structures that made eMortgages possible. *** With MISMO's day-to-day operations moving under the wing of Reston, Virginia-based MERS last month, it's fitting that we celebrate the achievement of those who were instrumental in the creation of eMortgages--our 2009 Technology All-Stars.

CHRISTOS BETTIOS

Senior Product Manager for Paperless Mortgage Initiatives Fannie Mae

Christos Bettios is the Steve Jobs (co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Apple Inc.) of eMortgages--more specifically, the early-day Steve Jobs who wanted to build products that could change the world.

A senior product manager for paperless mortgage initiatives at Fannie Mae, Bettios has been a constant presence on Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) conference panels and on MISMO's eMortgage Workgroup, sharing the investor perspective as well as his funky humor and project-centric viewpoints.

Bettios is a macro man who focuses on education and promotion among executives responsible for strategy. But he's also a micro man who's made himself available to all, showing up at even the smallest vendors' events and educational sessions. No matter which audience he's addressing, Bettios is a hands-on solution-creator specializing in development, execution and strategy.

"Folks should see eMortgages as a strategic initiative and not an IT [information technology] initiative," he says. "Line up your corporate strategy with this initiative and you'll have success."
