Jan. 8--For the third consecutive year, a record number of people in southern and Central Indiana filed for bankruptcy, reflecting consumers stretched by credit card and mortgage debt and widespread job losses in the manufacturing sector.
The 35,317 nonbusiness bankruptcy filings last year were 9.1 percent higher than in 2002, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Indiana.
