In the past 25 years, the number of credit unions declined by more than half, yet the number of members more than doubled. Credit unions numbered 10,687 and had 79.7 million members at year-end 2000, compared with 22,677 credit unions and 31.3 million members at year-end 1975, according to CUNA & Affiliates' economics and statistics department.
