Bank branches remain a crucial part of the distribution channel for retail banking products, despite their perceived inefficiency and high cost. Banks spent more on branch acquisition in 1994 than in 1993. With the acquisition of new branches comes increased total deposit volume. The banking industry is expected to focus its attention more on branches as it emphasizes core funding and interstate banking becomes more popular.

Criticize them as expensive anachronisms all you want, but the economic value of bank branches actually increased in 1994.
