Impact of New Federal Rollover Test on Automaker, Safety Uncertain.

Oct. 9--While the federal government's new rollover test will encourage automakers to add safety features to their vehicles, no one's predicting how many lives will be saved or how soon benefits will show.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration introduced the new test Tuesday as a "consumer information program." That means it places no new safety regulations on automakers, but NHTSA hopes that publicizing the test results will encourage manufacturers to make their vehicles safer.
