Best-selling automobiles: ranked by number sold in L.A. County.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Los Angeles County residents registered 447,031 new vehicles for the 12 month period ended May 31 according to data supplied by automotive researcher R.L. Polk & Co.

Toyota Motor Corp.'s models dominated, accounting for 112,893 vehicles under the Toyota

The Japanese automaker accounted for five of the top nine models sold during the 12-month span. It holds the top two spots with the Carnry and Corolla models, respectively. The hybrid Prius model was the fifth best-selling model while the Tacoma pickup and Sienna passenger van rank Nos. 7 and 9, respectively. Other models include the Toyota Yaris, which debuted at No. 16 with 5,542 units sold. The compact vehicle has been marketed for its fuel efficiency.

Another Japanese automaker, Honda Motor Co. Ltd., has found success with its Accord and Civic models, ranking Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. The company accounted for 53,414 vehicles registered in L.A. County.

Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. accounted for 33,585 units sold for the 12 month period ended May 31 while Detroit-based Ford Motor Co. registered 27,811 units in L.A. County.

Of the cars and trucks registered in L.A. County, hybrid vehicles accounted for 20,167 units or 5 percent.

TOYOTA CAMRY

TOYOTA'S Camry was the best selling car in Los Angeles County for the sixth consecutive year. L.A. County residents registered a total of 24,081 units during the period of June 1, 2006-May 31,2007 according to data provided by automotive research firm R.L. Polk & Co.

Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. redesigned the Camry in 2007 and added a hybrid version of the vehicle. The redesign earned the prestigious Motor Trend 2007 Car of the Year award. The company plans to sell 1 million hybrid versions by 2010. In L.A. County, the hybrid vehicle accounted for 2,726 units, or 11 percent of Canu'ys purchased.

Initially rolled off the factory line in 1983, the Canary derives its name from "kan-muri," the Japanese word for crown. Starting at $18,570 for the 2008 model, the mid-sized, four-door sedan comes in four categories ranging from the basic four-cylinder standard to the luxury V6 model and hybrid version.

EPA mileage ratings for the standard model are 21/31 miles per gallon for city/highway driving. The hybrid version is rated 33/34. Led by the Camry, Toyota has surpassed Ford in terms of car and light truck sales nationally. Toyota reported 224,058 sales during the month of July compared with just 189,764 sales for Ford. Year-to-date sales for Toyota have surpassed 1.5 million vehicles, up 6 percent compared to the previous year.
