Hydrogen made by reforming from waste iron mill scale.(PROCESS TECHNOLOGY)

A process in which mill-scale iron oxide is heated in steam to generate hydrogen for automotive fuel cells has reportedly been developed at the University of Toledo, Ohio. Called metal-steam reforming (MSR), the mill scale oxide is first converted into elemental iron. This is packed into cartridges and loaded on the vehicle. When steam is introduced into the preheated cartridges, the reaction produces pure humidified hydrogen, which may then be supplied directly to proton exchange membrane fuel cells.
