A new French law will shift the cost of collecting and recycling discarded tires to tire manufacturers and eventually to automakers and consumers.

French tire producers and auto manufacturers must pay the costs of collecting, transporting and recycling car and light-truck tires. The law will be extended to larger truck tires on Dec. 30.

Seven tiremakers - Michelin, Kleber, Bridgestone, Dunlop, Goodyear, Continental and Pirelli - have formed Aliapur, an association that will coordinate collective recycling efforts.
