10:00-10:50 PERERA Dan
(Coatings Research Institute-CoRI)
PART 1--Stress Development in Organic Coatings
Educational Session (2 hours)

Understanding all processes affecting the coating behaviour Including the stress development is crucial in formulating durable coatings. The presentation will mainly concentrate on methods to measure the stress in single and multilayer systems, the origins of stress in organic coatings (film formation and variation of temperature and relative humidity) and their interactions, the stress influence on coating adhesion and cohesion, the determination of coating characteristics such as Tg, CPVC and cross-link density by stress measurements and the effect of weathering on thermal and hygroscopic stresses.

(Frost & Sullivan Asia)
Paints and Coatings Market : Regional Outlook : Asia

This presentation talks in detail about the current and the future scenario of the Asian paint market, the drivers, challenges and gives a snapshot of the entire coatings market country wise and segment wise. The paper will consider the architectural and industrial sectors and will point out the major trends in China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

14:00-14:30 FERNANDO Ray
(Cal. Poly. State University, US)
Interactions of Surfactants With Heat and Hour Associative
Thickeners

Wide ranges of associative thickeners are used as rheology modifiers in waterborne coating formulations. Two examples of non-ionic associative thickeners in the market today include, hydrophobically-modified ethoxylated urethane (HEUR) polymers and hydrophobically-modified ethoxylated aminoplast (HEAT) polymers. While there is currently literature describing the interactions of HEUR polymers with surfactants, there is no such open literature on HEAT polymers. This paper will present results of a study to understand and compare interactions of HEUR and HEAT polymers with non-ionic surfactants in aqueous media.

Results indicate a strong influence of surfactant HLB on the behaviour of both HEUR-surfactant and HEAT-surfactant aqueous blends. Understanding the interactions between these polymeric surfactants and surfactants used in coating formulations is important in developing sound approaches to theology modification of coatings.

14:30-15:00 SCHAER Samuel
(Buhler AG-Switzerland)
Converting of nanoparticles in coating formulations: Unfolding
the innovation potential

The talk will focus on industrial converting of oxide nanoparticles in coatings formulations (e.g. SiO2, ZrO2, ZnO, TiO2, ITO etc.). Below 200nm particle diameter, the specific surface area of nanoparticles increases drastically, making agglomerate-free dispersion a difficult task. A new chemomechanical converting process in agitator bead mills will be presented. That process allows the dispersion and if required the crosslinking to the matrix of nanoparticles down to the sub 10nm range. Other surfactants with small molecular size and fast diffusion rate are required for the dispersion of very small nanoparticles, such as (1) silanes, (2) carboxylic acids and (3) b-diketones. Application examples will be discussed (e.g., UV-absorption, scratch-proof function etc.).

15:00-15:30 LAUBENDER Thomas
(Wacker Chemie GmbH)
Adding Value to Coatings by using Unique Organo Functional
Silicone Hybrids

The protection of metallic and mineral substrates from harsh chemicals, pollution and conditions associated with exterior weathering is an important and rapidly growing coatings market. The modification or replacement of polyurethane binders with unique amino and epoxy functional silicone hybrid coatings improves significantly the UV light and chemical resistance of industrial, marine and architectural coatings. The replacement of the Si-O-C bond with a Si-C-C bond in silicone hybrids increases the weather resistance and the coatings ability to withstand exposure to harsh chemicals such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid and ammonium hydroxide. In addition, the unique structure of organo functional silicone hybrids increases the coatings resistance to graffiti, dirt pick-up and biological growth.

16:00-16:30 SCHULTE Klaus
(Byk-Chemie GmbH)
Inorganic nanoparticles and silicone-based functional organic
additives for better wood coatings properties

Nanosized metal oxide particles get commonly accepted for their advantages in wood coatings formulations. Typically, only low dosages are needed to improve mechanical properties, weather and light stability or antimicrobial enhancements. Improved scratch resistance of coatings surfaces can be obtained with silica, cerium and alumina-based nanoparticles. Silicone-based surface active additives can also improve mechanical properties by orientation and crosslinking at the coatings surfaces. However, a synergism can be observed by certain combinations of both additive groups. Test results with waxes will be shown in comparison. Advantages and disadvantages of the different products will complete the presentation.

16:30-17:00 NGUYEN Tinh
(National Institute of Standards & Technology--NIST)
Corrosion and Delamination of Epoxy-Coated Reinforcing Steel in
Salted Concrete Environment

This study was initiated to provide a better understanding of the modes and mechanisms of the corrosion of epoxy-coated steel exposed in a marine concrete environment. Grit-blasted steel panels were coated with two commercial powder epoxy coatings at two thicknesses. The panels were immersed in a saturated calcium hydroxide aqueous solution containing 0.6 mole/liter sodium chloride maintained at either 35[degrees]C or 50 [degrees]C. Degradation was characterised and followed by infrared thermography, wet adhesion, and microscopic and analytical chemical techniques. Unscribed panels exhibited only water-induced adhesion loss, most of which was recovered after drying. However, in addition to the water-induced adhesion loss, scribed panels exhibited two modes of failure: anodic blistering near the scribe mark and cathodic delamination around the anodic blisters.

All that you never wanted to know about C.P.V.C

In over 20 years of being involved in the coatings industry the author has participated in numerous conversations where people have used the term C.P.V.C but from the context of the way the term was used it is obvious that the person using the term hasn't been made fully aware of how the term is derived or what it actually means. The aim of this paper is to explain in detail the concepts of C.P.V.C, what properties are effected and demystify this term/its meaning, practical usage in a simple and easy to understand manner

DAY TWO--Wednesday 11 May 2005

09:00-09:30 BOCK YONG Yap
(Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Singapore)
Optical Model for Metallic Paints

The optical model presented for metallic paints is based on the many flux multiple scattering calculation model first presented by Mudget and Richards. One advantage of this optical model is its extensibility to micas. This paper presented by Dr. Werner and Dr. Hartmut from Ciba Specialty Chemicals discusses more about the mathematical model involved in characterising metallic paints. You can also find out how the model can be applied to a software that can help you to do colour matching on metallic paints.

09:30-10:00 DENKINGER Peter
(Degussa AG)
Synthetic Resin TC--a grinding resin for universal pigment
pastes

Synthetic Resin is characterised by its universal solubility, compatibility and excellent pigment wetting. In addition, Synthetic Resin TC is suitable as an additive resin for improving certain properties such as hardness and gloss. TC is a special Ketone condensation resin. It is used as a carrier resin for pigment concentrates due to and adhesion, and for increasing the solids content in a variety of coating systems. This study gives a comparison of Synthetic Resin TC with an industrial standard in pigment pastes.

10:00-10:30 BIELEMAN John
(Elementis Specialties)
Solving colour acceptance problems in Decorative Paints

Poor colour acceptance results in performance problems such as poor colour development, inhomogeneous film appearance, mottling, formation of Benard cells etc. A new systematic approach to detect the cause and cure of colour acceptance shortcomings will be presented. This is demonstrated with practical examples related to using universal colourants in various aqueous and solvent borne decorative base paints.

10:30-11:00 KHOKHANI Ashok C.
(Engelhard Corporation)
High Glossing Kaolin-Based Extenders for Paints

Move towards lower VOC paints and the rising TiO2 prices have put a lot of pressure on paint manufacturers for reducing cost of paint formulation. Engelhard Corporation has developed a high glossing kaolin-based extender that helps paint chemists to achieve these objectives. ASPR G90 and ASP G92 are microfine particle size hydrous kaolins produced by an innovative patent-pending process technology. ASP G90 is designed to be used in high gloss and semi-gloss water-borne and solvent-borne architectural and industrial paints and clear varnishes. This presentation discusses the applications and uses of ASP G90 and ASP G92 in various formulations to maximise performance and cost benefits.

11:30-11:30 BREAK

11:30-12:00 NGUYEN Tinh
(National Institute of Standards & Technology--NIST)
Degradation modes of polymeric coatings exposed to UV
environments

The degradation modes of several crosslinked coatings subjected to various UV conditions has been investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique. Coated samples of unpigmented amine-cured epoxy, acrylic-polyurethane coating, and acrylic-melamine coatings were exposed to outdoor and well-controlled UV/humidity/temperature conditions. UV environments included full and truncated (300 [pounds sterling] nm removed) spectrum of a 1000 watt xenon arc lamp and narrow bandwidth UV radiation. Sample coated with a commercial acrylic-urethane coating was also investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was employed to follow chemical degradation of these coatings. AFM results of exposed samples clearly indicate that the predominant mode of coatings photodegradation is a localised, heterogeneous process, with pits form and grow at some locations but not at others. The information obtained in this study should help to develop better models for predicting the service life of thermoset polymeric coatings.

12:30-13:00 WEISS Jorn-Volker
(Degussa AG)
Low temperature cure powder coatings--a new challenge for
uretdione based polyurethanes

Traditional polyurethane powder coatings are less reactive than conventional TGIC, hybrid and epoxy powder coatings, but they are valued for their chemical and weathering resistances. With the right catalyst in a sophisticated formulation, however, a uretdione-crosslinked polyurethane coating can be a very reactive one. Recent work has shown that curing temperatures of 120[degrees]C for these systems are possible.

This paper describes the basic chemical principles of these uretdione systems; possibilities and limitations of such formulations, and the potential usage of these powder coatings in new application fields.
