Asia Pacific Coatings Show Conference 2004 Innovations within the science and technology of coatings

3-4 June 2004, Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Bangkok, Thailand

DAY ONE

Thursday 3 June 2004

09.30-10.30 REGISTRATION

10.30-11.00 Christopher de Lavigne Frost & Sullivan (Asia Pacific)

Outlook for the Asian Paints and Coatings Industry

Asia is continuing to show strong growth, with China continuing to lead the way. The Chinese market grew at 26% in 2003, and shows no signs of abating. With such growth in the Asian market, both opportunities and problems come with it and navigating in this market cannot always be plain sailing. Late players to the market may be forced into increased M&A activity to capture this growth.

The competitive nature of the markets, including downward price pressures from local competition will require multinational material suppliers to review product portfolios and either divest or invest. It may not be easy to make money in Asia, but no-one can afford not to be in the region.

11.00-11.30 Ray Fernando (Cal Poly State University, USA)

Nano-particle applications in coatings

Nano-particles have been receiving a high degree of attention within the coating industry during recent years. This attention has led to an increase in the number of different types of nano-particles available to the coating formulator.

However, there are many challenges that must be overcome before a formulator can effectively incorporate these materials into a coating formulation and reap the maximum benefits from them.

Commercially available nano-particles and their special characteristics will be described in comparison to conventional micron sized particles, followed by challenges such as achieving nano-scale dispersion in a formulation, and specific performance improvements offered by nano-particles.

11.30-11.45 Break

11.45-12.15 Janos Hajas (BYK-Chemie, Germany)

Stabilisation of titanium dioxide in non-aqueous and aqueous Coatings

Titanium dioxide exhibits its best properties only when well stabilised against flocculation in the organic binder. Additives must be selected according to the isoelectric point of the pigment, and gloss retention improvements will be introduced.

Properties of typical additive chemistries, useful for TiO2 stabilization, will be discussed, along with the description of their negative and positive side effects, especially the improvement of chalking resistance / gloss retention.

12.15-12.45 Klaus Schulte (BYK-Chemie, Germany)

Easy to clean furniture and parquet coatings

Easy to clean surfaces become more and more important, in particular in case of flooring and furniture in kitchen nurseries, and offices. A new series of silicone-modified additives will be introduced for use in furniture and parquet coatings. The easy to clean effect depends on dosage and binder system. Anti- graffiti, anti- dust, oil and water repellence could be demonstrated with simulated test methods. Starting formulations and the potential for new application fields will be highlighted.

12.45-14.15 Lunch

14.15-14.45 Johan Bieleman (Sasol Servo BV, The Netherlands)

Formulating low-odour, low-VOC latex paints

The main ingredients contributing to odour and VOC in latex paints are typically coalescing agents and ingredients used to improve wet-edge properties.

The odour of latex paints is significantly reduced replacing the traditionally used butyrate based coalescing agent in the paint with a new octoatc coalescing agent, with the added benefit of lowering VOC levels.

Several case studies will be presented showing that overall reductions in VOC up to 35% can be accomplished without detrimental effects on paint's performance properties.

14.45-15.15 Nell Duggan (Rohm and Haas Company, Australia)

Getting the most out of theology modifiers: Ways to formulate to improve paint quality and profitability

The market acceptance of waterbased paints is rising rapidly. As these paints become more common, consumers want and are prepared to pay for increasingly higher performance coatings. Choosing the right thickening system is crucial to satisfying these expectations--both the ease with which the wet coating is applied and the quality appearance of the dried paint film.

This paper outlines the different properties that theology modifiers need to deliver, and explains how to choose the right combination of products to deliver optimal rheology properties for high quality, high performance systems.

15.15-15.45 Wei Liu (Engelhard Corporation, China)

Effects of surface treatment on humidity resistance for coated mica pigments in waterborne coatings

Surface treatments of a pigment can greatly affect the performance of paint systems. This article will discuss surface chemistry and surface stabilisation of mica pigments to better bond with paint vehicles for enhanced long-term stability, especially in waterborne paint systems.

It will also examine the performance of a pigment with surface treatments from classic metal hydroxide to polysiloxane in waterborne and high solids paint systems under extreme humidity conditions.

15.45-16.00 Break

16.00-16.30 Jean-Luc Dallons (Cardolite Corporation, Belgium)

Phenalkamines curing agents for surface tolerant anticorrosion protective coatings in heavy duty and marine applications

Phenalkamines derived from cashew nutshell liquid are very performing curing agents for epoxy resins. Paint formulations based on phenalkamines curing agents bring about protective coatings with outstanding corrosion resistance. These coatings are surface tolerant, namely, can be applied on poorly prepared surfaces under humid conditions and are particularly suitable for heavy-duty industrial and marine applications.

16.30-17.00 Gerald Witucki (Dow Coming Corporation, Iran)

Improved flexibility of bisphenol-A epoxy paint by crosslinking with amino-functional siloxane resin

Bisphenol-A epoxy resin-based coatings are known for excellent corrosion and chemical resistance. Limitations of this class of coatings are poor flexibility, thermal stability and weather resistance.

Organo-functional silicone polymers have limited utility in providing improved flexibility, but create recoatabitity issues. A new class of organo-functional siloxane resins was developed by Dow Corning as crosslinkers to provide flexibility with excellent recoat performance, and tested in a range of coatings.

17.00-17.30 Zahra Ranjibar (hart Color Research Center, Iran)

Film growth models during the electrodeposition of epoxyamine adducts with different EEWs

The effect of the molecular weight of epoxy-amine adducts on the electrodeposition behaviour of dispersions was investigated and explanations for the different deposition processes will be introduced and linked to characteristic properties, allowing a greater understanding of the electrodeposition process.

17.30-18.00 Masakazu Iwamoto (BASF, Japan)

Pigments have been surpassed--X-Fast

BASF has launched Xfast in the market as 'stir -in Pigments' with a product line for decorative coatings. Xfast makes it easy to make paints and tinters simply by stirring the pigment into white paint or water.

Xfast has advantages of cost savings over the entire manufacturing process and also provide the technical solution for Zero VOC systems.

Details of how to use Xfast in the production process will be introduced. Please let us lead you to the new revolution pigment era.

DAY Two

Friday 4 June 2004

09.00-09.30 Philip Green (Paint Technology Consultant)

Low VOC latex based paints

Latex based paints have been around for over 50 years and are probably the most widely made, sold and used paint type in the world. To help react to the accelerating trend of reducing VOCs, the presentation goes through the raw materials in a in a 'current' latex based product and discusses why they are present, what effect they potentially have on the environment and how they can if required) be replaced by low VOC analogues-the focus is mostly with regard to tint bases and tinting systems.

09.30-10.00 Indrajit Bhattacharya (UCB Asia Pacific, Malaysia)

UV curing products for difficult wood

UV cured resins have entrenched themselves in the global wood coatings industry. They have become synonymous with high productivity for the coater and high quality finish for the end user. It is widely accepted that UV cured resins give highly resistant coatings against abrasion scratch and stains.

However, oily woods can attack some low molecular weight materials, leading to adhesion failure and delamination. Higher molecular weight UV cured polyurethane dispersions are introduced that can provide better adhesion to oily woods.

10.00-10.30 Dirk Reichel (Degussa Singapore)

Matte polyurethane powder coating

Amorphous polyesters are the typical reaction partners for polyisocyanare crosslinkers, a combination that results in high gloss powder coatings. Achieving a semi-matte or dead-mattenish is much more complicated, and despite numerous patents and articles, no single system has been widely accepted. Basic requirements are not sufficiently satisfied with traditional methods.

A new method to produce to matte polyurethane powder coatings was found to provide coatings with adjustable gloss and good flow. Formulations of matte polyurethane coatings will be reviewed.

10.30-11.00 Vinod C Malshe (University of Chemical Technology, India)

Use of PET waste for preparation of saturated polyesters for powder coatings

The world production of polyethylene terephthalate is nearing 33 million tons per year. In the manufacture about 0.2-0.3% emerges as a non-recyclable waste. The soft drink bottles represent another waste that cannot be recycled to the same application. Combined, this represents a resource about 2-3 million tons per year and this is going to be continuously available for years to come.

A series of polyesters have been developed using this waste. Potential applications include powder coatings resins, road marking paints and wire enamels.

11.00-11.30 Break

11.30-12.00 Nargess Tahmassebi (Amirkabir University of Technology, Iran)

Anticipating the long-term weathering performance of automotive paint systems by electrochemical impedance

The ability to predict accurately weathering performance of automotive paint systems in short periods of time is essential for the design and development of new coating products.

On the basis of a presupposition of the existence of a correlation between the hygroscopic stress and the electrochemical impedance properties of coatings, attempts were made to investigate possibility of predicting weathering performance of basecoat/clearcoat automotive paint systems through determination of their electrochemical impedance.

12.00-12.30 Saeid Bastani (Amirkabir University of Technology, Iran)

The influence of primer surfacer properties on the appearance of automotive coatings by DOE

In general evaluations of automotive coatings, appearance is more important than physical and chemical properties so its improvement is very necessary.

The influence of variation in primer properties such as thickness, roughness and floss on the appearance of the final coating is presented showing how to improve overall appearance by modifying the properties of the primer.

12.30-13.00 Nargess Tahmassebi (Amirkabir University of Technology, Iran)

The effects of acid rain on the appearance of an acrylic/melamine automotive paint system

Defective appearance of automotive finishes can be the result of acid rain etching caused by the erosion of the clearcoat surfaces. This defect appears as non-removable water spotting on the surface.

Changes in the appearance is a result of chemical degradation of the clearcoat, the study of which gives insight into the parameters involved and provides means to prevent acid etching through adjusting formulations as well as allowing the design of laboratory tests for evaluation.

To minimise such degradation defects, the chemical degradation of the clearcoat can be controlled so that a high acid rain resistant coating is produced.
