HEADNOTEResearchers at Ohio State are testing a production technique that may cut costs for plasticulture strawberry growers.
After propagating the strawberry runner tips in a greenhouse, Bergefurd's team transplants them into the field (left) where they are placed under plastic and will be harvested this spring.

OVER the years, Brad Bergefurd had read about work being done in North Carolina with a strawberry production technique that utilized runner tips instead of actual plants. When this extension horticulturist from The Ohio State University's (OSU) Piketon facility was invited to speak at a school in the Tar Heel State, he began learning more about the possibilities this technique could hold for Ohio growers.
