As of 3 May, the United Kingdom is free to resume exports of live cattle born after 1 August 1996, under the same terms as other EU member states. Following a favourable opinion from the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health in March, the European Commission decided to lift the global trade embargo it had imposed back in March 1996, at the height of the mad cow crisis when the British government finally acknowledged a link with human health. Beef, veal and derived products produced after 15 June 2005 can already be freely exported.
