Levy Mwanawasa, Chiluba's heir apparent, has repeatedly been obliged to deny questions over his ill-health. He insists he is as `fit as a fiddle', and that he would not have been chosen if the truth was otherwise.

Although very few leaders of the numerous opposition parties will openly admit it, Levy Mwanawasa, the burly-looking prominent Zambian lawyer, chosen to succeed President Frederick Chiluba, looks like a formidable candidate.
