TerraAfrica to confront desertification

HEADNOTE

Land programme

"Nepad's goal of increasing the rate of agricultural productivity above 6% a year will only be possible if the current trend in land degradation is halted and reversed into an improvement in

yield per hectare," according to Professor Firmino Mucavele, Nepad's chief executive. Launching TerraAfrica, Nepad's scheme to address desertification and land degradation on the continent, Mucavele said land degradation and low productivity in the agricultural sector were interlinked and responsible for critical food shortages experienced in many African countries. African governments had committed themselves to allocating 10% of their national budgets to agriculture and rural development, he said.
