Botswana shines in diamond sales

Botswana again topped the world list of diamond mining countries with a production value total of $2.12 bn, figures just released for the year 2000 show. Russia came in second $600m behind while South Africa holds third spot at $1.11bn. Other African diamond producing majors are Angola ($740m), DRC

($585m), Namibia ($419m) and Central African Republic ($72m).

According to Merryll-Lynch diamond analysts, rough sales were particularly strong in 2000 as cutters restocked after a sharp rise in sales resulting from increased demand for the millennium. The effect on global sales following 11 September and the world economic slowdown will be reflected in the Diamond Trading production review.
