Ka-ching! BKD sales and marketing specialist Gary DeHaven, 62, won the $1.4 million jackpot in the Missouri lottery. DeHaven, who's based in the firm's Springfield practice office, plans to use his winnings to pay off his house and some minimal credit card debt, blacktop his driveway, seal a pond and buy a new lawn tractor. He'll save the rest in an interest-bearing account. DeHaven usually buys a ticket or two each week. His lucky numbers? 2, 5, 10, 12, 14 and 25. Because DeHaven opted to take a lump-sum payout, he won't get the entire $1.4 million, but he'll still get a nice chunk of change: about $700,000 before taxes. The Missouri lottery will withhold 29% for state and federal taxes, leaving DeHaven with approximately $500,000 in cash. (Source:NewsLeader.com)
Surfs up! With its Santa Monica, Calif., home base, it's no wonder that sand and surfis part of the culture at Stonefield Josephson. One team member is an avid surfer, another is a competitive sailboat racer, while a third recently took a month off to serve as a deck hand on a sailing vessel to Croatia. But East Coasters build sun 'n' fun into their cultures too: Stout Causey & Horning, based in McLean, Va., is treating its 165 or so employees, plus their guests, to a five-day trip to Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. Previous firmwide trips have been to the Caribbean and Las Vegas. Both firms have revenue of approximately $20 million.
