What State ID Do I Need for My Business?

More

A business that has registered with the Secretary of State as a corporation or limited liability company will be given a number when the formation documents are filed. Depending on the state, this number will likely called the Secretary of State File Number.

An Employer ID Number (EIN), which is also known as a federal tax identification number is often used as an identification number for other purposes, including on state tax returns.

If your business has employees, it will need a number from the Employment Development Department from your state to deal with payroll issues.
