Food for thought

Musical Administrators

What an appropriate headline for your May editorial ("All Around the Mulberry Bush" p. 8)! I can't get "monkeys" and "weasels" out of my mind! We are indeed overrun these days with seemingly well-meaning, but uncommitted (for the long term), administrators in healthcare.

Musical administrators also applies to the world of higher education. University and college presidents and vice presidents often move on in a three to five year time frame. New VPs arrive with their novel ideas and concepts that they want to implement immediately in order to "make their mark" on the organization. As foodservice directors, we must reestablish credibility with the new team members if we want to keep our jobs.

Different FSDs take different approaches to this task. Some follow the "fox hole" syndrome tact: "This new VP will be gone before long, so I'll just lay back, try to be invisible and resist implementing the new stuff."
