ASFSA meets in Minneapolis

New president, legislative priorities on agenda.

The American School Food Service Association (ASFSA) held its 56th annual conference in Minneapolis earlier this summer. Among the major happenings at the

meeting was the installation as the group's new president of Gaye Lynn MacDonald, foodservice program manager for Bellingham (WA) Public Schools. She succeeds Marcia Smith, FSD at Polk County (FL) Schools.

The conference theme was "School Nutrition: Dish It Up," and it featured addresses from well-known ener Ed McMahon as keynote speaker, USDA Food & Nutrition Services Undersecretary Eric Bost, Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-MN) and 2000 Teacher-of-the-Year Ron Clark.

Attendees were able to choose from an agenda offering more than 100 education sessions in seven topic areas like administration, human resources and leadership. Special topics included "Confronting Childhood Obesity," Computer-Based Training," Approaches to Food Safety in the Child Nutrition Program" and Ending Hunger-Caring for Our Communities."
