Cooper'stown's baseball, rock'n'roll to converge on big league cities

Remember Alice Cooper? Don't look now, but the snake-toting 70's rocker is now a theme restaurant operator. Blending sports-especially baseball-and rock'n'roll, Cooper'stown is adorned in sports and music memorabilia, including the "Fender Wall of Fame" collection of famous rockers' guitars. The Phoenix

unit's first year yielded $4.5 million in sales. Cooper owns 40% of the business.

The first Cooper'stown opened in 1998 near the America West Arena and Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix. Now Cooper and his partners are targeting other baseball cities which sport new (translate: consistently filled) ballparks. Cleveland, Detroit and Denver are likely locations, according to managing partner Brian Weymouth, who is looking for partners, including highly visible professional athletes, in each of the concept's target markets. (Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson is a Phoenix partner.) Cooper'stown also sells sponsorships for $500 to $60,000. The menu consists mostly of barbecue items, sandwiches, burgers and salads. Merchandise accounts for 10% of sales, according to Weymouth.
