Design Side
Not one to brag, hospitality designer Tag Galyean is almost giddy discussing his recently completed mega-project, the final phase of the historic Broadmoor resort's two-year, $76-million reconstruction/ renovation. "I think this is the biggest resort story since Dorothy Draper did The Greenbrier after World War II," he says. "I put my heart into everything I do, but this is really extraordinary! It just doesn't quit."
He's recently back from The Broadmoor's grand reopening celebration, at which Galyean partook in festivities culminating the two-year project in Colorado Springs. He's done so much work there over the years that he counts the resort's president, Steve Bartolin, among his close friends.
For 27 weeks, Galyean and his design team worked night and day with Bartolin and his staff, along with an extended group of contractors (up to 350 workmen a day), to complete the project in an unprecedented time frame, the designer notes. "This was a 17-month job done in six months, so basically there were three days of work happening every day," he says. From November until April, they did two 10-hour shifts a day, six days a week. "I don't care how good you are," he says. "For a team to be able to function like that, you've got to know each other pretty well."
