Don't Forget to Pitch the Freelancers

Tuesday, November 6 2007

When you're trying to get coverage for your product or service, don't forget to build your media outreach list with some freelance writers included. There are some amazing business freelance writers who contribute to leading publications including Inc., Fortune, Fast Company and hundreds of other magazines. Build your freelance clip file by adding names and emails of writers that you come across that are not regular contributors to the magazine or online publication. If they're not on the masthead, then they are probably a freelance writer and you can work to track their contact information from the Internet and add them to your pitch list.

And always be mindful when I say, "add them to your pitch list" I don't mean adding them to an e-newsletter list or spam them with email that is not newsworthy. Ensure whatever you send out to them is not only newsworthy but something they could pitch to one of the publications they already freelance for.

Hi Nettie, This is so true. Freelancers are always looking for story ideas, as they can't make money unless they sell their stories. I think this is a very under-utilized P.R. technique. Thanks for sharing. Best Regards, Margie Zable Fisher Public Relations www.zfpr.com.
